Why Herb Names On US Labels Rarely Match The Texts
Sanskrit names, regional common names and Latin binomials line up imperfectly, and the resulting naming gap is a substantive problem rather than a translation inconvenience.

The name on an American supplement bottle often has no clean relationship to the name in a classical Ayurvedic text. The gap is a substantive identification problem rather than a matter of translation style.
Three naming systems doing different jobs
Sanskrit names in the classical literature frequently describe a property, an appearance or a use. Several distinct plants can therefore share a name, and one plant can carry many.
Regional common names add another layer, varying by language and by district, and they are the names under which raw material is actually traded within India.
The Latin binomial is the only system designed to identify one species unambiguously. It is also the system least likely to appear on a package aimed at retail buyers.
How a name becomes ambiguous
When a plant named in a text is unavailable in a region, local practice substitutes something with similar described properties and often carries the original name over to it.
Over centuries those substitutions become established, so that a single classical name is now attached to different species in different places, each with a legitimate lineage of use.
Scholarly work on identifying the plants of the classical texts is ongoing, and for a number of entries the identification remains genuinely disputed among specialists.
What American labelling rules require
Supplement labelling requires the common or usual name of each ingredient, and it requires that the part of the plant be identified. It does not force the binomial into every listing.
A responsible manufacturer prints the binomial anyway, because that is what a buyer, a pharmacist or a poison centre would need in order to know what was taken.
Marketing pushes the other way. A Sanskrit name carries the authority of tradition on a shelf, and precision is not what it is there to communicate.
Why this matters beyond pedantry
Safety information is species specific. A caution about one plant cannot be applied to a bottle that may contain a different one, and neither can a reassurance.
Drug interaction data is species specific in the same way. A pharmacist checking a patient's supplements needs a binomial to look anything up with confidence.
Research is affected too, since a trial that names its material loosely cannot be reliably combined with others. Reviewers exclude such studies for exactly this reason.
What a reader can do with this
Treat the binomial and the plant part as the informative fields on the label, and treat a missing binomial as missing information rather than an oversight.
Where two sources appear to disagree about a plant, check whether they are actually discussing the same species before assuming a real disagreement about evidence.
The naming gap is old, well documented and unlikely to close. Reading around it is a skill, and it is the first one this subject asks of anyone buying a product.
