Amla: vitamin C, and what that does and does not mean
Indian gooseberry is genuinely one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, which has produced a set of claims that go well beyond what vitamin C actually does.

Phyllanthus emblica, amla or Indian gooseberry, is a component of triphala and of chyawanprash, and is used extensively in its own right.
It is notably high in vitamin C and in polyphenols, and it has attracted a good deal of research interest.
The vitamin C content
Amla contains substantially more vitamin C by weight than citrus fruit. Reported figures vary considerably with variety, ripeness and analytical method, and the direction is consistent.
Its vitamin C is also relatively stable to processing compared with some sources, attributed to the presence of polyphenols that protect it.
What vitamin C actually does
Worth stating clearly, because a great deal is claimed for it.
It is essential — deficiency causes scurvy, a serious condition. It is required for collagen synthesis, which is why deficiency produces bleeding gums and poor wound healing. It enhances absorption of non-haem iron, which matters for vegetarians. It acts as an antioxidant in the body.
What it does not do: prevent colds in the general population. This has been examined extensively, and reviews consistently find no reduction in incidence in the general population from regular supplementation, with a modest reduction in duration and a possible benefit in people under extreme physical stress.
High doses are not more beneficial. Absorption becomes saturated, excess is excreted, and very high doses cause gastrointestinal upset and, in susceptible people, increase kidney stone risk.
Deficiency is uncommon in populations with access to fruit and vegetables, though it does occur in people with very restricted diets, in heavy smokers and in some clinical situations.
The antioxidant argument
Amla is high in antioxidants, and the antioxidant hypothesis deserves a careful look because it underlies an enormous amount of marketing.
The theory — that oxidative damage drives ageing and disease, and that dietary antioxidants counteract it — was compelling and has not performed well when tested.
Large randomised trials of antioxidant supplements have generally failed to show benefit, and several have shown harm. Trials of beta-carotene in smokers found increased lung cancer incidence. Meta-analyses of antioxidant supplements have found no mortality benefit and, in some analyses, increased mortality with certain supplements.
Meanwhile diets high in fruit and vegetables are consistently associated with better outcomes.
The reconciliation appears to be that whole foods are not equivalent to isolated compounds, that oxidative signalling has physiological functions that suppression interferes with, and that antioxidant capacity measured in a test tube does not predict effects in a body.
Which means "high in antioxidants" is a weak claim, and eating the fruit is better supported than taking the extract.
What has been studied specifically
Lipids. Several small trials report reductions in cholesterol measures. Studies are small and mostly from a limited number of centres.
Glycaemic parameters. Small trials with mixed results.
Endothelial function and inflammatory markers, with some small studies reporting effects.
Gastric acidity and dyspepsia, with limited evidence.
Reviews have generally described the human evidence as preliminary.
Chyawanprash
The classical preparation in which amla is the principal ingredient, along with numerous other botanicals, ghee, honey and sugar.
It is widely consumed as a general tonic. It contains a substantial amount of sugar, which is worth noting for anyone with diabetes or managing energy intake.
Clinical evidence is limited to a small number of studies, generally small.
As with any multi-ingredient preparation, the composition varies between manufacturers, and the contamination concerns discussed elsewhere on this site apply.
Safety
Amla as a food is unremarkable. Concentrated preparations have a few considerations.
Bleeding risk. Some evidence of antiplatelet activity. Relevant before surgery and for anyone on anticoagulants.
Blood glucose, with possible lowering effects relevant for anyone on diabetes medication.
Gastrointestinal effects, particularly at higher doses, and it has laxative properties as part of triphala.
Very high vitamin C intake is a consideration for anyone with a history of kidney stones or with haemochromatosis, given the effect on iron absorption.
The reasonable position
Amla is a nutritious fruit, high in vitamin C, and eating it is a good idea for the same reasons eating other fruit is a good idea.
The broader therapeutic claims rest on preliminary evidence, and the antioxidant framing has not held up well when tested.
If you want the vitamin C, eat fruit and vegetables generally, which delivers it alongside everything else that comes with them and which has the evidence behind it.
Discuss concentrated preparations with your doctor if you take anticoagulants or diabetes medication, or have a history of kidney stones. Chyawanprash contains substantial sugar.
