Cold Drinks, Ice Water And The Warm-Food Preference
The classical preference for warm food and drink rests on the tradition's model of digestive fire, and the modern evidence on beverage temperature is narrower than either side claims.

The instruction to prefer warm food and drink is one of the most widely repeated in Ayurvedic dietetics, and iced water is its standard modern counterexample. What supports the instruction is worth setting out carefully.
The classical reasoning
Digestion is described in the texts as a transformative fire, and cold is described as the quality most directly opposed to it.
Cold food and drink are therefore said to reduce digestive capacity, with the effect described as more pronounced when taken during or immediately after eating.
The instruction follows directly from the model. Within the framework it is not an isolated rule but a consequence of how digestion is conceived.
Why iced drinks are an American case
Ice with water is close to universal in American restaurants and is served by default, which makes it a habit rather than a choice for most people.
Chilled beverages of all kinds are also more prominent in American eating than in most of the world, which is why this instruction gets so much attention here.
The classical texts have no view on ice specifically, since the routine availability of it is a consequence of refrigeration.
What research on temperature actually shows
Studies of gastric emptying and beverage temperature exist and are small, and their findings are modest and inconsistent rather than decisive in either direction.
Cold drinks briefly lower the temperature of the stomach contents, which the body corrects, and the metabolic cost of that correction is minor.
Claims that iced water causes digestive disease are not supported. Claims that beverage temperature is entirely irrelevant to comfort overstate the evidence in the other direction.
Where comfort and physiology diverge
Some people report cramping or discomfort with very cold drinks, and that report is real regardless of whether a mechanism has been demonstrated.
Cold liquids can also trigger symptoms in particular conditions, including sensitivity in teeth and in some airway conditions, and these are specific rather than general.
The classical instruction may be capturing a genuine comfort effect while explaining it with a model that modern physiology does not use.
Reading the instruction sensibly
Preferring warm food and drink is a low-stakes preference with a long history and no meaningful downside, which is different from a clinical necessity.
Adequate fluid intake matters more than temperature, and any instruction that discourages drinking should be treated with suspicion for that reason.
Persistent digestive symptoms, whatever the drink temperature, are a reason to see a physician rather than to adjust a habit and wait.
