Why Midday Is Meant To Be The Main Meal
Classical dietetics puts the largest meal at noon on a solar model of digestive fire, and circadian metabolic research offers partial and imperfect support for the timing.

Classical dietetics places the largest meal of the day at midday and treats the evening meal as lighter and earlier. The reasoning is solar, and modern chronobiology partly agrees with the conclusion.
The classical reasoning
Digestive fire is described as rising and falling with the sun, strongest when the sun is highest and weakest at night when the body is oriented toward rest.
Midday is also the period the texts assign to pitta, the dosha associated with transformation and heat, which reinforces the same recommendation from a second direction.
The evening meal is therefore prescribed as smaller, lighter, warm and taken well before sleep, so that digestion is largely finished before lying down.
What circadian metabolic work suggests
Glucose tolerance follows a daily rhythm in most people, tending to be better earlier in the day and poorer in the late evening.
Insulin sensitivity, gastric emptying and the thermic response to eating all show time-of-day variation, so an identical meal is handled differently at noon and at midnight.
Studies comparing earlier and later eating patterns have found differences in weight and metabolic markers, though the designs vary and the effects are not large.
Sleep is the clearer argument
Eating a large meal shortly before lying down is associated with reflux symptoms, since a full stomach and a horizontal position work against the oesophageal sphincter.
Late heavy eating also tends to fragment sleep, and disturbed sleep in turn affects appetite regulation the following day, which makes the pattern self-reinforcing.
This is the part of the classical instruction that holds up most robustly, and it requires no commitment to the underlying model of digestive fire.
Where the instruction meets modern life
Working hours in most cities make a substantial cooked lunch difficult, and the evening meal has become the social and family meal in much of the world.
Inverting that is a scheduling problem rather than a dietary one, and partial adaptations — a larger lunch and an earlier, lighter dinner — capture most of the benefit.
Shift workers cannot follow the instruction at all, and forcing it produces worse outcomes than eating sensibly within whatever schedule their work imposes.
What not to conclude from it
Meal timing is a modest lever compared with what and how much is eaten, and framing it as decisive misrepresents the strength of the evidence.
People taking insulin or other glucose-lowering medication cannot rearrange meals freely, since dosing is tied to timing and changes need medical supervision.
The defensible reading is that earlier, more regular eating suits human physiology reasonably well, and that the classical rule arrives at a sound conclusion by its own route.
