Daily Routine
Weekends, Social Life And A Routine That Bends
The classical routine assumes uniform days, while American weeks have two different kinds, and the tradition's own flexibility clauses are more useful here than strict adherence.

Dinacharya describes one day and expects it to repeat. An American week contains two distinct kinds of day, and the discrepancy is where most attempts at a routine come apart.
The uniformity the texts assume
The classical routine is written as a single sequence from waking to sleep, with variation supplied by season rather than by day of the week.
A seven-day cycle with two days set aside for rest and social life is a comparatively recent organisation of time and is absent from the classical scheme.
The result is that the texts offer no guidance on what to do when the week's own structure prescribes an irregular day.
What social scheduling does to timing
Later weekend sleep shifts the body clock, and the shift is measurable enough that sleep researchers have a name for the pattern of weekday and weekend divergence.
Meal timing moves with it, and evening social occasions push the largest meal of the day into the period the classical framework assigns to settling.
Monday then presents a body clock that has drifted, which is the mechanism behind the familiar difficulty of the first working morning.
Where the tradition provides for flexibility
The classical literature is not rigid on principle. It adjusts instructions by season, region, life stage, occupation and the person's current capacity.
It also treats social and ethical conduct as part of the regimen, which means withdrawal from shared meals and gatherings would not be a straightforwardly correct application.
The framework's own logic favours a routine that a person can actually keep over one that is abandoned after a fortnight.
Which anchors are worth defending
Wake time is the anchor with the most support from sleep research, because it is the one that most directly governs light exposure and the timing of subsequent sleep.
A morning sequence is easier to protect than an evening one, since mornings are less subject to other people's plans.
Meal composition can absorb variation more easily than meal timing, which is a practical way to yield on the harder constraint.
Reading adherence honestly
A routine followed on five days out of seven is a routine. Framing partial adherence as failure tends to end the practice rather than improve it.
The classical texts describe regimen as cumulative and long term, which is not consistent with treating a single irregular day as consequential.
Where irregular sleep is producing symptoms that persist through the week, that is a clinical question and belongs with a physician rather than with a schedule.
