Daily Routine

Travel Across Time Zones And What Routine Survives It

Long flights break every anchor the classical daily routine relies on, and separating what a routine can offer from what circadian science addresses keeps the claims honest.

A transatlantic flight moves a person several hours away from their own body clock in a single day. The classical routine has nothing to say about that directly, and what it offers has to be identified carefully.

What actually happens to the body clock

The internal circadian system is entrained mainly by light, and it shifts only gradually, at a rate of roughly an hour a day under ordinary conditions.

Crossing several time zones therefore leaves the internal clock and the local clock disagreeing for days, which is what produces the familiar pattern of daytime sleepiness and night waking.

Eastward travel is generally harder than westward travel, because advancing the clock is more difficult for the system than delaying it.

What the classical framework contributes

The texts describe travel itself as increasing the qualities associated with vata, naming movement, irregularity and dryness as its characteristic effects.

That description matches the conditions of modern air travel reasonably well, since a cabin is dry, the schedule is irregular and movement is the entire point.

The classical response is to counter those qualities with warmth, moisture, regularity and rest. It is a coherent response within the framework and is not a treatment for circadian misalignment.

Which practices transfer intact

Anything that does not depend on a specific hour transfers directly: oral care, washing, oiling and a fixed sequence of morning activities performed whenever the day begins.

Hydration and warm food are consistent with both frameworks, since cabin air is genuinely dehydrating and digestion is commonly disrupted by schedule changes.

Re-establishing a consistent daily order on arrival is the element with support from both directions, because regularity is the shared instruction.

What the evidence supports for adjustment

Timed light exposure is the intervention with the strongest research basis, with light in the local morning or evening used to shift the clock in the required direction.

Adjusting sleep times before departure has been studied, as has meal timing, though the evidence for meal timing is considerably weaker than for light.

Anything involving medication, including over-the-counter sleep aids and melatonin products, is a matter for a pharmacist or physician rather than a routine.

Keeping the two accounts separate

A traditional travel regimen can make a disrupted few days more orderly and more comfortable. That is a real benefit and a limited one.

It does not shift the circadian clock, and describing it as curing jet lag would attribute to it a mechanism it does not have.

Frequent long-haul travel with persistent sleep disruption is worth raising with a clinician, particularly where it affects driving, work safety or an existing condition.

Daily Routine

The evening routine and winding down

Classical texts give less attention to the evening than to the morning, and what they do prescribe corresponds closely to what sleep research recommends.
