Standardised Extracts And Why Two Herb Studies Differ

Plant material varies with soil, season, species and processing, so two trials of the same named herb may be testing substantially different chemistry.

Two trials of the same named herb can reach opposite conclusions without either being wrong, because they may not have tested the same material. Variation in plant products is the recurring complication.

What varies in plant material

Constituent concentrations differ with soil, climate, altitude, the season and time of harvest, the age of the plant and which part was collected.

Drying, storage and extraction method vary further, and each of these steps changes which compounds survive and in what proportion.

A dried root, a water extract and an alcohol extract of one plant are three chemically different products, though a label may describe all three by the same name.

What standardisation means

A standardised extract is adjusted so that a named marker compound is present at a stated concentration, which makes batches comparable in that one respect.

The marker chosen may or may not be the compound responsible for any effect, and standardising to it does not fix the concentrations of everything else.

Two products standardised to different markers, or to different concentrations of the same marker, are still not interchangeable in a trial or on a shelf.

The species identity problem

Common names cover multiple botanical species, and related plants are gathered together or substituted when supply is short or when they look similar.

Studies using DNA barcoding on commercial herbal products have found substitution and undeclared filler material in a meaningful proportion of samples tested.

A trial that reports the botanical species, the plant part, the extraction method and the batch is doing something many published studies do not.

How this shapes the literature

When a herb produces inconsistent results across trials, material differences are among the most plausible explanations and are rarely investigated.

Meta-analyses that pool such studies inherit the problem, since averaging results across different preparations does not yield an answer about any of them.

It also means a positive trial does not endorse a product on a shelf, because the shelf product may share only a name with the tested material.

What a buyer can check

A product listing the botanical name, the plant part used, the extract ratio or marker content, and a batch number is giving more information than most.

Third-party testing certificates exist for some manufacturers and are worth looking for, particularly for contamination testing rather than potency claims alone.

Where none of that is available, the honest position is that the contents are unverified, which is a reason for caution alongside prescribed medication.
