Bhasmas And What Calcination Actually Does
Metallic and mineral ashes are prepared by repeated grinding and firing, a process the tradition treats as detoxifying and that modern analysis reads as particle size reduction.

Bhasmas are mineral and metallic preparations reduced to a fine ash through repeated purification and firing. They are the most technically demanding and the most contested part of the Ayurvedic materia medica.
What the process involves
The raw material is first subjected to shodhana, a purification sequence in which it is heated and quenched repeatedly in liquids such as milk, buttermilk, oil or herbal decoctions.
It is then ground with plant juices into a paste, formed into discs, sealed between clay-lined vessels and fired. The cycle of grinding and firing may be repeated many times over.
The texts give tests for completion: the ash should float on water, should not return to its metallic form, and should disappear into the lines of the fingertips.
What analysis finds in the product
Instrumental studies of finished bhasmas generally report metal oxides and sulphides in very fine particles, often in the nanometre to micrometre range, along with organic residue from the plant materials used.
Repeated grinding and firing is a plausible route to that particle size, and it changes the chemical form of the metal from what was originally put in.
Whether that change makes the preparation safe is a separate question from whether it is chemically different, and the two are frequently conflated in defences of the practice.
The heavy metal problem is not theoretical
Some bhasmas are made from lead, mercury or arsenic-bearing minerals, and case reports of poisoning following traditional metallic preparations appear in the medical literature from several countries.
Surveys of commercially sold products have repeatedly found metal content in some samples at levels far above what food or supplement standards permit, including in products sold internationally.
A properly prepared bhasma and a badly prepared one look similar to a buyer, and no label reliably distinguishes them, which is the practical difficulty.
How the tradition frames the risk
Classical texts are explicit that improperly prepared metallic medicines are dangerous, and devote considerable attention to purification precisely because the risk was understood.
They also restrict these preparations to trained hands and to specific circumstances, rather than treating them as general tonics for anyone who asks.
That internal caution is often lost in commerce, where metallic preparations are marketed for vitality and strength to buyers with no way to assess the manufacturing.
What a reader should take from this
There is no reliable way for a consumer to verify how a bhasma was made, and independent testing of a single purchased batch is rarely practical.
Anyone who is pregnant, has children in the household, or has kidney or liver impairment has particular reason to avoid metallic preparations entirely.
If someone has been taking such a product and feels unwell, blood testing for heavy metals is a straightforward request to make of a doctor.
