Climate control creates indoor conditions the classical seasonal scheme never anticipated, and reading those conditions by their qualities is the framework's own method.

Most Americans spend the great majority of their time in buildings whose temperature and humidity are controlled. The classical seasonal framework was written for people who did not, and that gap is instructive.
What indoor climate actually does
Forced-air heating raises temperature while lowering relative humidity, often substantially, across an entire winter. Air conditioning cools while also removing moisture.
Both therefore produce dry air, which means the indoor environment is dry in summer and in winter alike, with the outdoor season making less difference than expected.
Air movement is constant in both cases, and the temperature is held steady rather than varying across the day as outdoor conditions do.
How the classical scheme would read it
The framework classifies environments by qualities rather than by names, and the qualities on offer here are dry, mobile and, in the case of air conditioning, cold.
Those are the qualities the texts associate with vata, which is why writers applying the framework to modern life reach for that category when discussing offices and airplanes.
This is a legitimate extension of the method, since the texts themselves classify unfamiliar conditions by their described properties rather than by precedent.
What is genuinely known about indoor air
Low indoor humidity is associated with dry skin, dry eyes and irritated airways, and this is documented in occupational and building science research.
Ventilation rate affects carbon dioxide concentration and the accumulation of indoor pollutants, both of which have measurable effects on comfort and reported symptoms.
These findings support attention to indoor environment. They do not validate the dosha classification, which is a separate framework offering a different explanation.
Where the seasonal instructions lose their footing
Ritucharya adjusts food, activity and clothing to the season on the assumption that the season is what a person is experiencing.
Someone who moves between a heated house, a heated car and a heated office experiences a mild, dry, constant environment regardless of the month.
Following outdoor-season instructions in that situation applies a correction for conditions the person is not actually in, which is a straightforward category error.
What survives the translation
The transferable instruction is to notice the actual conditions and adjust to them, which is what the seasonal chapters are doing rather than prescribing a calendar.
Practices addressing dryness of skin and airways are among the least controversial in the tradition and align with ordinary dermatological advice about moisture.
Persistent respiratory symptoms, sinus problems or skin conditions that do not settle are medical questions. Indoor air may be a contributing factor and is rarely the whole explanation.
